Volunteering at Elsie's

Individuals wanting to volunteer are asked to complete the online form where you will have an opportunity to specify in what ways you would like to volunteer. Below are brief descriptions of our most common volunteer opportunities.

Animal Caretakers

Elsie’s Barnyard is seeking volunteers who enjoy caring for animals and have a general knowledge of the various species at Elsie’s Barnyard.

Animal caretakers are asked to commit to one hour per week OR one hour per month during our peak season (June-Aug).

Animal caretakers play a vital role in facilitating our mission at Elsie’s Barnyard. Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Grooming and bathing the animals.
  • Helping to monitor their overall health and well-being.
  • Cleaning pens/ cages, dishes, and buckets.

Animal Handlers

Elsie’s Barnyard is seeking volunteers who enjoy working with animals and have extensive knowledge of, and experience with, a variety of species.

All volunteers working with animals are required to undergo hands-on training regarding Animal Assisted Activities.
Animal handlers are asked to commit to a three-hour shift per week during our peak season (June-Aug).
Animal handlers play a critical role in facilitating our mission at Elsie’s Barnyard.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Grooming animals and preparing them for engagements.
  • Advocating for the animals in all situations ensuring their safety and the safety of the participants.
  • Coaching participants on how to best interact with the animal.
  • Maintaining control of the animals at all times. 

Program Volunteers

Elsie’s Barnyard is seeking volunteers who enjoy working with children with special needs and adverse medical conditions.

Program volunteers are asked to commit to a three-hour shift per week during our peak season (June-Aug).

Program volunteers play a critical role in facilitating our mission at Elsie’s Barnyard. Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Implementing and ensuring all barnyard rules are followed.
  • Helping to ensure the safety of the participants.
  • Interacting with participants and supporting guardians during their visit.

Event Volunteers

Elsie’s Barnyard is seeking volunteers who are able to help during our quarterly family day activities. These themed family days require a lot of volunteer power as we typically have up to 50 participants.

Volunteers help in a variety of areas to ensure the event runs smoothly. Events are scheduled on the weekends and require volunteer support for approximately 4 hours.
